How to Style a Coffee Table Like a Professional

Coffee tables are often the focal point of the room they're in, and styling it like a pro is easy! Just follow these tips, and you'll have a beautiful designer look for your coffee table in no time.

  • Start by dividing the coffee table into four quadrants. They do not have to be equal size, but they do need to come together in the center of the table. This is the space you will style by adding different decorative items to each quadrant. Limiting the space to style helps to make it easier when choosing what decorative items to use.

  • Use items of different heights and shapes. This creates movement through the vignette and is more pleasing to the eye. Here we added height with the vases, used books as risers, and at the same time included both square and round shapes.

  • Keep within a color scheme, and include items with different textures. Try to include something natural like greens or flowers, even if they are faux.

  • Always add lighting, be it a small lantern, LED candles, or scented candles. Here we used our scented natural crockery candles.

  • Add some whimsy, like we did with our cute little hedgehog. Make sure you have one (maybe two, but don't overdo it) fun, interesting, quirky things that are special to you! Using things you love or collect helps the design show your personality more.

  • Use the rule of three, or odd numbers of items. This rule is the golden rule of designers. It's simple, yet it works magically to create beauty and balance.

  • The last and more important tip is that I personally love to use a tray to corral the items. This adds great texture and dimension to your coffee table and is easy to remove when you need more entertaining space.

So there you have it! Use these tips next time you decorate your coffee table and you'll see how easy it is to create a designer look that you'll love – without the designer! Happy decorating!
